Understanding Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Units (MMCUEs)

One of the more confusing aspects about buying medical marijuana is understanding what a MMCEU is and what that means for your purchasing frequency. Luckily you can put that confusion to rest with this new guide to understanding the purchasing process.

What is an MMCEU?

The Mississippi Medical Marijuana Law allows you to purchase a total of 24 MMCEUs per 30 day period. A MMCEU can be one of the following:

  • 5 grams of flower
  • 1 gram of concentrate (resin/rosin, tinctures, moon rocks, “wax”, etc)
  • 100mg of infused products (consumables like edibles)

This breakdown means that each of these bullet points is 1 unit. So, if you buy 7 grams of flower, 3 grams of concentrate and 200mg of infused products, you have now used 7 MMCEUs of your 24. The only limitation on your MMCEUs is that you can only have 24 in a 30 day period. Meaning, you can get all 24 units in flower by buying 84 grams of flower, or you can get it all in infused products with 2400mg of edibles. Most patients tend to mix and match so that they can monitor and control their usage easier.

How many MMCEUs can I purchase at one time?

As mentioned previously you can only buy 24 MMCEUs in a 30 day period. There is no limit on how much you can buy at one time meaning that you can get all 24 units at the same time if you would like, however, this is not recommended. Ideally, you space it out to at least twice a month so you can adjust your dosage and ensure that you do not buy too much. It is a good rule of thumb to only ever have 24 MMCEUs at your residence at any point in time.

So I understand the units, but what about the 30 day period?

The 30 day time constraint is considered a lagging constraint. From the moment of purchase, you are now unable to purchase that amount of units for the next 30 days. The best way to look at this is by an example:

I buy 10 MMCEUs on January 1st. I now have 14 MMCEUs that I can purchase in the next 30 days. If purchase 8 on January 10th, and 6 on January 15th, I now have 0 MMCEUs remaining. However, on January 31st (30 days after my first purchase), I am now able to purchase 10 more MMCEUs. I will then be able to purchase 8 more units on February 9th, and 6 more units on February 14th.

Essentially, once you have purchased a unit, you are now down that amount of units until 30 days later. A good rule of thumb is to get roughly the same amount of units each time so you can easily keep up with your MMCEUs. Patients like to either go weekly or bi-weekly so that they are always able to purchase what they need.

How do I know how many units I have left?

Luckily, this is a pretty easy question to answer. If you go to where you downloaded your license on the MS DOH website, and click your blue license number, it displays how many units you are able to purchase. When you visit a dispensary, the check-in employee will also have that number for you.

The number one thing to remember is if you’re unsure, just ask! Dispensary employees are there to help you so don’t be afraid! They’re committed to the best experience for you so that you can get the healing benefits you deserve!
